4 Facts About Native American Reservations

The term Indian reservation refers to the ancestral territory still occupied by a Native American nation. While there are approximately 565 federally recognized tribes in the U.S., there are only about 326 reservations. This means that almost one-third of all currently federally recognized tribes have lost their land bases as a result of colonization. There were well over 1,000 tribes in existence prior to the formation of the U.S., but many faced extinction due to foreign diseases or were simply not politically recognized by the U.S. Initial Formation Contrary to popular opinion, reservations are not lands given to Indians by the United States government. Quite the opposite is true; land was given to the U.S. by the tribes through treaties. What are now reservations is the land retained by the tribes after the treaty-based land cessions (not to mention other mechanisms by which the U.S. seized Indian lands without consent). Indian reservations are created in one of three ways: By treaty, by executive order of the president, or by an act of Congress. Land in Trust Based on federal Indian law, Indian reservations are lands held in trust for tribes by the federal government. This problematically means that the tribes technically do not own title to their own lands, but the trust relationship between tribes and the U.S. dictates that the U.S. has a fiduciary responsibility to administer and manage the lands and resources to the best advantage of the tribes. Historically, the U.S. has failed miserably in its management responsibilities. Federal policies have led to massive land loss and gross negligence in resource extraction on reservation lands. For example, uranium mining in the southwest has led to dramatically increased levels of cancer in the Navajo Nation and other Pueblo tribes. The mismanagement of trust lands has also resulted in the largest class-action lawsuit in U.S. history known as the Cobell case; it was settled after 15 years of litigation by the Obama Administration. Socioeconomic Realities Generations of lawmakers have recognized the failures of federal Indian policy. These policies have consistently resulted in the highest levels of poverty and other negative social indicators compared to all other American populations, including substance abuse, mortality rates, education, and others. Modern policies and laws have sought to promote independence and economic development on the reservations. One such law—the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988—recognizes the rights of Native Americans to operate casinos on their lands. While gaming has produced an overall positive economic effect in Indian country, very few have realized significant wealth as a result of casinos. Cultural Preservation Among the outcomes of disastrous federal policies is the fact that most Native Americans no longer live on reservations. Its true that reservation life is very difficult in some ways, but most Native Americans that can trace their ancestry to a particular reservation tend to think of it as home. Native Americans are place-based people; their cultures are reflective of their relationship to the land and their continuity on it, even when they have endured displacement and relocation. Reservations are centers of cultural preservation and revitalization. Even though the process of colonization has resulted in much loss of culture, much is still retained as Native Americans have adapted to modern life. Reservations are places where traditional languages are still spoken, where traditional arts and crafts are still created, where ancient dances and ceremonies are still performed, and where origin stories are still told. They are in a sense the heart of America-a connection to a time and place that reminds us how young America really is.

Racist Speech Free Essays

As a society, we need to realize that with honesty, you have a certain responsibility and walk a fine line between offending people and possibly making racial statements. Therefore, the main difference between my interpretation and the conventional one is my focus is on unintentional vs.. We will write a custom essay sample on Racist Speech or any similar topic only for you Order Now Intentional racist speech. The Balance between racist speech and expression in a college environment can be difficult to decipher; students are encouraged and should express themselves while n campus, this embraces their creativity, passion, talent and allows them to feel Like they’re in a safe environment. However, there is a fine line between expressing themselves in an offensive way vs.. An effective way. The article written by Derek Book titled Protecting Freedom of Expression on the Campus focuses on a situation that occurred at Harvard, stating that â€Å"Two students hung Confederate flags in public view, upsetting students who equate the Confederacy with slavery’. According to my deflation this Is clearly racist speech and started quite the commotion among the Taft at the prestigious university and caused some other colleges to take racist speech too new level. In Books article his statement of colleges â€Å"some have enacted codes to protect their communities from forms of speech that are deemed to be insensitive to the feelings of other groups. † Even the words â€Å"Insensitive to the feelings of other groups† degrades the first amendment and could lead to racism. While some colleges chose not to enforce any restrictions, others varied In their approach and seventy of retribution. There are many ways to deal with this issue but the fact that each institution deals with it differently proves that racist speech continues and the answer remains elusive. Even though communities have the right to regulate speech they must do so very cautiously. If they do, they must apply the rules and limitations across the board and cannot enforce selectively to prohibit certain kind of messages and allow others that they think are acceptable; which can again be portrayed as racist speech. He goes on to say that â€Å"I am sure that the vast majority of Harvard students believe hat hanging a Confederate flag in public view-or displaying a swastika in response-is insensitive and unwise because any satisfaction It gives to the students who display these symbols Is far outweighed by the discomfort It causes to many others. † When freedom of speech does not guarantee that the choice made by the student’s will be the same choice Book would make. Right after that quote, Book states â€Å"l share this view’, but we forget that the flag symbolizing slavery was not the intent but rather an unintentional form of racist speech. If you are an agency of the government including public universities the free speech clause in the first amendment will be upheld even if the event offends the feelings or believes of that community. Book says in his article â€Å"l have difficulty understanding why a university such as Harvard should have less free speech than the surrounding society- or than a public university’. In response Harvard is a private university which means it is not obligated to all government rules and regulation, the problem comes from the ambiguous limitations of the first amendment. Who’s to say what is offensive or not in the eyes of the law, there are no tangible words for racist speech which results in many different interpretations. Colleges are not the only institutions with this problem; racist speech can be found everywhere. Even President Barack Obama is trying to end discrimination regarding the military and people who have different sexual preferences. The controversial â€Å"don’t ask, don’t tell†, passed in 1993, prevents gay men and lesbians from revealing their sexual orientation, and prevents the military from asking about it. This discuss policy has been in effect for over 15 years, and it’s been supported by our military at all levels. However, this law of the â€Å"don’t ask, don’t tell† policy is unconstitutional because the main purpose of the First Amendment is freedom of speech, if lesbians and gay men are not allowed to have this right in the military; then the military and congress who approved this law are both racist. This is an example of racist speech and our government is acting as if it were a private institution and not part of a government that is owned by the people. President Barack Obama wants to put an end to the anti-gay policy because it clearly sends a message of discrimination regarding the right to freedom of speech. It is a battle between our right to freedom of speech and the Military right to pass a law only because it can. Although these incidents seem quite manageable they can easily become a much bigger problem. For instance what if someone decides to burn the offensive flag at Harvard down, we now have crossed the freedom of speech line and have committed an illegal act. Can you imagine what would happen in our public schools if we tried to enforce â€Å"don’t ask, don’t tell†. Speech can cross over to action which causes racial tension but is also considered a crime. If you minimize racist speech you put a spotlight on racism only making the situation worse igniting the flames that started the problem in the first place. Book says â€Å"it would be better to ignore† however ignoring the problem is a Band-Aid not a solution. In order to come to a universal agreement that will end racism, means making it a priority to our first amendment. Book says â€Å"The fact that speech is protected by the tuition from Harvard the students who felt offended by the flag that symbolized slavery through their eyes, would strongly disagree with Book protesting that it is our right. However our leaders in congress seem to strongly agree, by their actions of standing by â€Å"Don’t ask Don’t Tell†, they must believe gay men and lesbians do not have the right to voice talk or congregate with others of their persuasion while in the service of our government about their sexual preference. As long as there is freedom of speech, it is considered wrong to tell someone what they can or can’t say. How to cite Racist Speech, Papers

Professional Practice in Real Estate Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Professional Practice in Real Estate. Answer: Introduction Malaysia has expanded its real estate sector to provide houses, offices and commercial properties. Malaysian real estate sector is continue to grow after slow downturn in 2014 and 2015. The surveyors are professionally trained persons. They supervise land properties with the aim of obtaining appropriate returns. They can be investors and developers. The surveyors include physical inspection of property. A surveyor carries out market research analysis, property information service and feasibility studies. Malaysia focuses on transforming real estate. The Malaysian economy is growing sustainably even during global slowdown. A conflict of interest arises due to involvement in multiple interests. It creates risk for judgement and corrupts decision making. So, it is necessary to manage conflict of interest for surveyors. Professional Practice in Real Estate Industry in Malaysia The valuation and property services in Malaysia are governed by the Ministry of Finance. It has one quarter, fourteen state offices and thirty eight district offices. The property valuation organisation is service oriented organisation in Malaysia and it can be under government department or private enterprise. It includes consultation tasks. Such organisations provide expert opinion to clients on the matters related to real estate. The services provided by experts are property evaluation, analysing project viability, preparing market study, real-estate brokerage and property supervision (Baharum, Hwa Salleh, 2016). The real estate organisations play an important role in real estate industry development. It involves various degree of complexity and challenges in the progress of nation. The real estate organisation is an intensive organisation and contains extensive knowledge. The challenges and opportunities available in the industry becomes motivation for the surveyors to obtain knowledge from employees. The surveyors need to update and manage knowledge as clients are demanding now days (Rogers, 2017). Conflict of interest for surveyors The slow growth in loan requirements has dropped number of property transactions in Malaysia. The surveyors are required to avoid conflict of interest and identify interests and manage situations. Some conflicts are easy to identify and resolve while others require careful thought. It is the responsibility of surveyors to identify and deal with the conflicts properly (Zainuddin Nordin, 2016). The identification andmanagement of conflicts of interests in an effective manner are challenging but important ingredient of professionalism. Checking conflicts of interest The conflict of interests can be checked and dealt by robust systems at place. RICS Regulation Annual review for the year 2013- 14 recorded that the registered valuers commonly fail at audit due to the lack of robust or a system. This can be utilized for the purpose of checking conflict of interest and where such system exists, there is failure in recording the results of checks (Azmi, Nawawi, Ab Latif Ling, 2015). Most common conflicts arise when more than one client is acted for the same transaction. Individuals can easily avoid such situations however it becomes difficult for larger businesses with multiple offices. In case of identification of conflict, robust rules are required to be put in place regarding transparency, declarations and resolutions. Difference of opinions may arise regarding the question of continuation of a particular situation. The avoidance of such situations are becomes must however there are reasons when the client request for proceeding. Therefore, the existence of conflict must be declared to the relevant parties and their written assignment must be secured for proceeding further (Ochieng, Abdulai, Obeng-Odoom Malien?, 2017). Misunderstandings can result in vulnerability to action in cases where there is no written evidence. Think carefully The principle of transparency is considered as a good option. In the real estate industry of Malaysia focus is given on transparency. The openness with the parties to a transaction reduces the chances of conflict. For example, in cases where a client is introduced to an investment property at an agreed purchase fee required to be paid when the transaction is successfully completed. Here the purchase fee will only be received if the transaction proceeds and not in other cases which can result in conflict of interest (Jiram, Bujang, Zarin Latib, 2016). Mitigating factors are considered as protective of the interest of the client. In situations where the client is provided with more than one service on the same transaction, there arises some tension for the individual provider of those services if success related fee is involved in one of those services. The fee can be adjusted by allowing independent provision of the additional services by other firms. For many years, multiple provision of services has been in the market and diversion of fees to an opponent can be found by many firms as unacceptable. A good practical guidance is provided by the RICS Malaysia Commercial Real Estate Agency Standards on the effective handling of conflicts. The guidance states that both the terms of acquisitions and sales instructions should be in writing which also includes the odd purchase transaction that arises from introductions. It is to ensure that the client is made aware regarding all the possible conflicts that may arise along with the provision of opportunity for discussing them (Adnan, Daud, Alias Razali, 2017). After this, a written agreement should be prepared on the approach adopted. Sharpening Skills In 2017, the economic growth of Malaysian economy is expected to be lower. In this scenario a formal CPD training must be undertaken by all the practicing chartered surveyors along with the recording of their activities with the help of RICS website. It is easier for firms to conduct training sessions that will assist in testing the abilities of the individual surveyors regarding the handling the situations o conflict (Hamzah, Yahya, Sarip Mohd Adnan, 2016). The well- functioning of the property market for many years has led to the establishment of the market practices. The key objectives behind regulation include providing reassurance and confidence to the end customer that highest quality service is being provided which is uninfluenced by any bad practices. Every step taken by the surveyor must include the principle of openness. There is no risk and fear to the surveyor when they bring openness and agreement seeking in their actions (Jiram, Bujang, Zarin Latib, 2016). Disclosure The drop number of property transactions in Malaysia has increased cost of living and economic uncertainties. So before carrying out real estate work as a surveyor or someone connected has interest in selling and buying property must follow instructions as per act. To buyers: If a person is interested in selling property directly or indirectly than he should disclose conflict of interest to buyers in writing who has financial interest. The seller should inform buyer for the benefit he will get financially from transaction. To seller: If a person is engaged or interested in selling property directly or indirectly to buyer than the seller should follow the following instructions: The seller should work independently to sell property. The surveyor is recommended to no longer act for seller. If a surveyor is one person agency than it is recommended that seller goes to another agency. Personal connections The real estate agency act has specified rules to protect interest of buyers and sellers in the case of conflict of interest. It defines someone connected as: Any person in surveyors employment A partner under partnership agreement Any entity that has common interest Ways to avoid conflict of interest Knowledge management The real estate organisations in Malaysia involves a lot of consultation tasks and giving expert opinions on the matters related to property. Knowledgemanagement is important to protect interest of clients. Knowledge is collection of data and information which can be achieved through interpretation and context process. It can further be divided into tacit and unambiguous knowledge. The knowledge management is a framework acquired from employees of organisation to communicate surveyors. Communication is the process to share information. It can provide better knowledge to surveyors regarding trends in real estate. For the valuation practice knowledge is the key element for valuers. Having good knowledge of environment can help surveyors to gain competitive advantage (Lim, How, Liew, Chye Sarah, 2016). Knowledge management implementation model Theknowledge management is a multiple approach which covers essential elements of sector. A good knowledge management increases the competitive advantage. It enables fast decision making. The traditional approach of doing things can help in understanding need of industry (Sanni Hashim, 2016). A basic knowledge management model includes three categories known as cognitive domain layer, functional layer and resources layer. These layers represent the function of industry. Other than implementation model there are measures which can be taken to influence knowledge management performance. It determines the critical factors for the success of industry (Baffour Awuah Gyamfi-Yeboah, 2017). The investors and developers should focus on risks where markets are strong. The Malaysian Real Estate Market Outlook retrieves information from CBRE 2017. Boon: The real estate investment is one of the safest form of investment. The genuine demand leads the market. The market is expected to cool down with prices becoming negotiable. The areas with good transportation connectivity such as MRT, highways and HSR continue to be hotspots. The demand for affordable houses is likely to become intense. Bane: More experienced home buyers Challenging years can be for developers. There can be ongoing concern due to low crude oil prices and geo political issues. Conclusion From the above report it can be concluded that conflict arises among investors because of difference in interest. But this situation can be easily avoided and situation can be managed. Some interests are easy to categorise and resolve while others require careful thought. The surveyors are responsible to identify and deal with the conflicts. The identification and management of conflicts of interests in an effective manner is challenging but it can be made possible by thinking carefully and sharpening skills. Disclosure of information by industry has helped surveyors to avoid conflict. The knowledge management implementation model has also helped surveyors to overcome conflict of interest. Getting Published on Kindle

Getting Published on Kindle Getting Published on Kindle Getting Published on Kindle By Simon Kewin Getting your work published onto Amazon’s Kindle eReader is really very easy.   Perhaps you’re a writer interested in self-publishing some of your work. Or you might simply want to learn more about the ePublishing revolution and how to get involved. In either case, doing so is actually very straightforward. Since January this year, Amazon’s Digital Text Platform (DTP) has been available in all countries, allowing you to upload your work and publish it in Amazon’s Kindle store. And since there are estimated to be 1.5 million Kindles in use, this represents a large potential market.   To get started you just need a standard customer Amazon account. You sign in with this at the DTP site and from there start uploading. You provide your manuscript in Microsoft Word or HTML format and Amazon will automatically convert it into the format used by the Kindle. You also need to provide some extra information about your work : title, description, language, keywords, categories, price, publishing date   and so forth. You also have the option of providing some cover artwork, which is recommended as it will make your published work much more eye-catching.   The whole process of providing these details is slick and friendly. There is also a lot of help available if you get stuck, in the form of FAQs and forums. You don’t have to get everything right first time. You can preview what you’ve uploaded, tweak things and then, when you’re happy with everything, click Publish. Doing so costs you nothing – although Amazon will take a cut of any sales you make.   It can take a day or two for your work to finally appear in the Amazon store, but once it’s there customers can start buying it for their Kindles. Each work gets its own page on the Amazon site, complete with all the usual options such as reader reviews and ratings.   In fact, publishing your work onto the Kindle is the easy part. The hard part is attracting potential readers to your work. Amazon’s system helps in that the description and categories you provide make it easier for potential readers to find you. However, to attract many readers, you will have to put effort into publicizing your work yourself.   Whether or not â€Å"self-publishing† (or, as some prefer to call it, â€Å"indie publishing†) like this is a sensible move for you as a writer is something only you can decide. You should be aware that a conventional publisher probably wouldn’t be interested in handling a book that has already been self-published in this way as first publication rights wouldn’t be available. But you might think it’s worthwhile to self-publish some pieces of work in the hope of building up a readership interested in finding out more about you and your other work.    This article only covers the Amazon Kindle and there are, of course, other eReaders out there (the iPhone, for instance). There are other services on the web, similar to Amazon’s, that allow you to self-publish your work for these other devices. But Amazon’s DTP provides a good place to start if you’re interested in exploring the world of ePublishing. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Challenging Leopold Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Challenging Leopold - Essay Example King Leopold II was Belgian King between 1865 and 1909. Under Leopold II control, the regime became notorious for forced labour used to gather ivory, palm oil and rubber. It killed so many locals in turn, until its misdoings were eventually exposed and widely reported by the Congo Reform Association, which had been established by Edmund Dene Morel, after which King Leopold was forced to transfer control to the Belgian government. Edmund Morel discovered that the trade in Congo was based on slave labor while in the course of duty at the Shipping Company where he worked. He realized that most ships landing were laden with valuables: ivory, rubber and minerals. However, the ships departing to Congo mainly carried soldiers, ammunitions and other weapons of destruction. There was only one conclusion from the discrepancy: slave labour was ongoing in Congo. Chapter 1 Henry Morton Stanley was an American journalist and an explorer, who was born in Wales. He explored through the Congo River a nd Basin and vast lands of the present DRC. He teamed up with resource hungry King Leopold II to establish the Congo Free State. In Europe, explorers were respected and treated in awe. This explains why many European countries competed to send explorers. The motives of British Exploration in Africa were several. Importantly, it was to acquire resources and new market for its product. Secondly, it was as result of political reasons as major European nations were competing for colonies. Importantly, Britain desired to spread religion, open up the region and stop slave trade. The targets of anti-slavery fervor in the 1960s were mainly Arabs operating mainly from East Africa. Dr Livingston was a Scottish born explorer, famous for his works in Central Africa. His initial aim was to spread Christianity and commerce in the region. While in Africa, he developed illness and was not heard from for a long time prompting his search. Henry Morton Stanley is famous for having found Dr. Livingston e in Africa. This was after being commissioned by the New York Herald to go and search for him. His search for Dr Livingstone was important to his future career because after finding Dr Livingstone, he preceded with exploration in the Congo Basin and River, and it his findings which prompted him to team up with Leopold to establish Congo Free State. Chapter 2 Leopold was obsessed with making Belgium an imperial power, succeeding at what his father did not. Edmund Dene Morel account describes him as a cruel, greedy yet with a charming personality. Leopold believed that one of the key to building a powerful, imperial Belgium was to through colonial expansion. One of the core reasons why he wanted a colony was to establish recognition: he felt that he was not truly in charge of Belgium because of Parliament. Therefore, he wanted a colony in order to establish his recognition, and create a profit to build monuments. He promoted his interests in Africa through creation of Congo Free Stat e, which was a privately held state. The Brussels Geographical Conference took place in September 1876 at the request of Leopold and its agenda was to discuss Europe activity in Africa. H invited several experts and explorers to the conference. He used this conference to rubber stamp his interest in Africa,

The Rhetorical Triangle - Essay Example In that, it does not leave the reader questioning about the seriousness of the writer. Additionally, the font makes the reader curious about the information is written down or the information they are about to read. Times New Roman typeface creates a decent impression especially when written in a business or school setting as it shows that the student or individual knows what they really want with their life. Additionally, using Times New Roman as a font choice makes the reader see that the person is bold in their writing, as it shows confidence and understanding of what the person needs. For example, when written in a resume compared to other fonts such as the Comic Sans, it shows that the job applicant is serious and is worthy of the job position. Therefore, although most people do not take the typefaces seriously, they say a lot about a person. In that, a person with a good character or confident may be misjudged because of the typeface they use. Importance of Electronic Marketing in Business Today

Importance of Electronic Marketing in Business Today MARKETING MIX AND ONLINE MARKETING: Marketing mix, commonly known as the four Ps namely Product, Price, Place and Promotion was first suggested by Jerome McCarthy (1960) and is a vital aspect for establishing and executing the marketing strategies. Let us view in detail the different elements of the marketing mix on the context of online marketing. Product: Online marketing can lead to the improvement of the products in a lot of ways. Online marketing pave the way for the market researchers to evaluate the customers need and the criticism from them can be used to change the existing products and develop new products. Tescos online shopping website records the repeated purchases of the customers, which they use later on to provide a customized list for fast purchasing. It also facilitates a chance to customize the products as per the consumers wants like www.nike.com who offers customized instructors just for clients. Price: This refers to the pricing policies of an organization which are adopted to determine the price for a product or service (Chaffey 2003). Baker et al. (2000) discovered two habits that have been used by the manufacturers while marketing their products online namely; Setting up a low price for the products by beginners. Following the existing price in the internet by the current companies. A benefit of usage of internet is that it helps to minimize the costs on search that shoppers would have to bear while searching for information about new products and services. It also makes the shopping more active as the famous auction site www.ebay.com which makes the users to bid the price for the products. Online marketing makes the transaction more transparent making it almost impossible for the suppliers to manipulate on cost. The customers can also view sites to know the best deals for a particular product like www.shopmart.com, www.easyshop.com etc. Place: The place element in marketing mix explains the way a product is distributed to its end consumer. Allen and Fjermestad (2001) say that the biggest implication created by the internet in the marketing mix is for the place. This is due to the world wide reach of the internet. Internet has opened before the organizations a new channel to make their products reach their customers, apart from the traditional way of sales helping to cut down the barriers between both the parties. The huge investment that has to be made in stores can be reduced with business taking place in a much realistic way. Entry of internet into the marketing mix has avoided the retailers or third parties between buyers and consumers making it more challenging for the existing online retailers to ensure on time logistics. Promotion: The promotion element of the marketing mix shows how marketing conversation is made within the customers and the stake holders about the company and their products (Chaffey 2003). It deals with exchanging information regarding a product or service to the target market. Burnett (1993) defines promotion as the marketing function concerned with persuasively communicating to target audiences the components of the marketing program in order to facilitate exchange. The main ingredients of promotion mix are Sales promotion Advertising Personnel selling Public relations Direct marketing The internet is nowadays being used as an effective tool for marketing communication. The internet made it available before the companies, yet another way of channel to communicate to the buyers about the product offerings. The idea of online marketing can vary the promotion mix in the following ways: Evaluating the way the internet can be used at various phases of the purchasing mode. Revising new ways of using the ingredients of the promotion mix. Applying promotional tools to serve in various phases of customer relationships like attaining visitors for the first time and retaining them as a regular visitor. While using internet as a tool for marketing, it become possible for the organization to send emails on proper authorization basis, containing information related to the products which makes it possible for the company to maintain a long term relationship with the buyers online. SCHULLO, S., 2004] ONLINE MARKETING vs TRADITIONAL MARKETING The earlier forms of promotion can classified under traditional marketing. The various methods are radio, billboards, TV and posters. The other methods such as email marketing, banner promotions, all come under the online marketing. Difference lies in the purpose it is used for. Measurability is an additional aspect that distinguishes both forms of marketing. It is easy to trace the clients with the use of tools in online marketing, whereas traditional marketing has several problems, one being dependent on human memory. The SMEs also utilize the online marketing due to the huge ROI obtained from it. It is possible for them to change their operations, by calculating the start of their leads. [http://www.sabest.biz/blog/2010/03/online-marketing-vs-traditional-marketing.html] FUTURE OF ONLINE ELECTRONIC MARKETING RESOURCES It is possible for the e-marketer to support and develop the value chain processes of electronic commerce for each and every persons advantage, as a result of the physically powerful base of electronic marketing resources. Solid effort, a number of successes and a little failures may be engaged in this process. In order to obtain profits for all of the marketing processes, it is necessary for the e-marketer to demonstrate serious thinking talents of the tactical and planned market scheduling and also be able to employ the available methods of electronic marketing effectively. The complex methods of electronic marketing is utilized in order to create value-added services, which produce results that are unthinkable in structure, even though a variety of electronic means are available to use. On the other hand, in order to get an explanation, it is necessary to estimate the present situations. A total of four aspects or issues are given below by which the electronic marketing may be affected by or may affect, which have been obtained by considering and arranging all the sustaining and contradicting data in an order: Development of technology Growth of the existing software The accomplishments achieved by combining Internet achievements The motivating force required by the marketers to provide better service to their consumers With the help of electronic marketing, a number of advantages can be obtained which include providing a means of communication between the e-marketers and the customers of the organization, as possible in a small sized business. It is required for the e-marketer to prepare and train well, as a variety of advantages are obtained by employing electronic marketing. Business Web Sites: B2C, B2B, C2C The sites which sell or market products and services even if it is the order takers or others who are more person-oriented mainly include in Web categories which are business to business (B2B), Business to Consumer (B2C) or Consumer to Consumer (C2C). Some sells to both consumers and businesses. (Internet Marketing by Barbara G. Cox and William Koelzer). BUSINESS TO CONSUMER SITES (B2C) The sites of B2C are more familiar to the public who uses the internet. In most of the industry, they market goods and services to the consumers. There are many stores such as department; clothing, electronics, food etc have their Web sites to sell the products. These sites dont have a store like buildings. They only sell their products through the internet. But not all these sites sell through online itself, the consumer buy their products from office, local store or even by telephone. The examples of B2C sites are amazon.com (books and other related products), staples.com (office supplies) etc. The online shopping is getting higher due to the increase in computer consumption in households. BUSINESS TO BUSINESS SITES (B2B) The market of B2B is increasing in an amazing rate. On the basis of Jupiter Research, the companies around the world will hike up their expenditure on B2B. As per the aggressive estimation of Goldman Sach, the worldwide spending through B2B will reach high rates in the coming years and he assumes that 80% of B2B worldwide commerce will be held online around the next 20 years. On the basis of Active Media Research, the majority of B2B sites are created for double purpose that is to sell both the products and services directly or indirectly around 98% of sites, 73% of them gives information. The main aim of making sales of the 77% of sites is by making an offline contact with the customers. CONSUMER TO CONSUMER (C2C) Majority of the Consumer to Consumer sales occurs through auction sites. In a survey conducted by Harris Interactive where The National Consumers League was the sponsor, it was found that the bidders of online auction of 83% had purchased things in the online auction. According to the report, 75% of the buyers have pay out average of $100 or less and the 21% have payed amount between $100 and $500. So in auction sites, the sellers will post their things to sell and their items will be bided by the customers. And the highest of those customers bids wins the thing which is for sale believing that the bid will meet a fixed minimum amount. A small amount of commission will be taken from the sellers bank account by the auction site if each of his item get sold. The buyers wont pay anything to the site. The best example for Consumer to Consumer site is E-bay. It is the biggest Consumer to Consumer auction site. E-bay has been a great model for the auction sites which are emerging now to help the businesses conduct e-commerce. Although eBay is generally a consumer to consumer service, the simplicity of this site is a great value of study for buying or selling the products in a Business to Business auction site by any business planning. In eBay, and many other auction sites the users will register and if they are planning to sell anything on the site, they can set up a way of payment, usually financial account or credit card that makes the funds transfer. The buyers will be able to analyse what they are looking for by entering the key words of any particular product in the search engine and the site will display products list for sale. The sellers will make the payment for listing and selling their products. Insertion fees will be charged by eBay generally around 25 cents and $2.00 wh ich will rely upon the opening bid, and a fee will be charged at the end of the auction which will be between 1.25 percent to 5 percent of the final selling price. The enhancements like featured placement or bold font will also be charged as an extra fees (Internet Marketing by Barbara G. Cox and William Koelzer). Rousseau and Duty to the State Essay -- Philosophy

It is generally agreed that the great philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the artist Jacques-Louis David had played a great role in serving and supporting the French Revolution, in addition to, showing their devotion to their state and explore the notion of duty to the state each one by his own special way. The great philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau had inspired the revolution by his argument and ideas that was based on Reason. He played a great role in exploring the notion of duty to the state by providing the public with his argument in the social contract, which was frequently quoted and referred to during the early stages of the Revolution. The social contract was concerned to establish whether or not the authority of the state is legitimate. His fundamental problem is to find a way in which we can live in a state and yet remain as free as before. He explained that, this only could be achieved if the general will of the individual always coincide with the will of the state. Therefore, he had recourse to the concept of the general will, which is defined as "the general will of a group taken as a whole rather than as a collection of individuals." He tried to convince us of this by describing the difference between the state of nature and the civil state, and in effect, asking which we think is better. To be in the state of nature, would be to act on appetite and so be slavish and bad. To be in the civil state, is to act according to reason and so be noble and good. We ought constantly to bless the moment that we moved in to the civil state because this gives us the chance to be noble and good .So,says Rousseau it is in each of our interests to choose the general will .Therefore, if we think according t... ... and dimmed color of Brutus giving a broad tonal range, this tends to sharpen the impact of dramatic contrast. It seems that the formal elements of this painting are conspiring to focus our attention toward the grieved women, and to show us how brave is Brutus' decision, that he even neglect his family's sorrow and even turn his back away from his sons' bodies .He commit his decision unhesitatingly, raising the voice of duty to the state over everything else even his own flesh and blood . Finally, we can conclude and detect a lots of similarities between the ways in which Rousseau and David did explore the notion of duty to the state .Both of them believed in the great role of philosophy and art in educating the public, therefore, they used their profession successfully to express their devotion to state and serve their country, each one by his own way .

The goal of Lucky Inc.

Is to develop a foremost business owner of the traveling agency for the individual of the age range from about 20 to 30 year old. Lucky Inc. Will be devoted to establish stronger relationship within their clients via extensive lesson of how to treat guest and sever them the best service, and would like the company to well popular among the clients and other publics as the most popular tourist agency in the Ideal area. The main focus of the firm would be to gradually develop, and become successful by the first few years of operations. Our main goal would be to provide an excellent professional facility through demonstrating an adequate understanding of the places that individual would like to travel to and adventurous events that will be held. On an industrial report stated that the biggest disparagement of the variety of customers that has been to the tourist companies that already exists â€Å"know nothing about their products, they Just open the catalogue and read,† to quote one of many disappointed travelers (Blackwell, 2008, p. 332).To make the most of over the knowledge and skills we gained in the Lucky Inc. Apparel store, staff would to both educate and instruct the customers to the various types of vacation accessories that they might be wanting of to have the quality vacation time they planned out while they are in the Ideal area. Products and Services Recently, Lucky Inc. Became as the allotted agents for Ideal's Travel, which will be the biggest and popular traveling agency out in the marketplace. However, per almost with no advertising, Lucky Inc. As sold about 200 adventure vacations in the past several months, netting about $56, 800 in commissions including the sales of insurance policies and other services also have calculated to this amount, and could possibly add much more. Lucky Inc. ‘s clients will also be offered to have the opportunity of an inclusive variety of facilities to services to help their exciting tour, including semina rs of before and after trip, tourist coverage, and a booklet of specific offers to each vacation place, etc.I plan to sell my share in the apparel store and finance the profits in my potential new company which will be a traveling agency as Lucky Inc. Moreover, I would be also financing $51, 600 of my savings from the past ears in this company, and take loans of $70,000 probably from friends and relatives. Furthermore, the return on shareholders capital by three year is anticipated to be close to 100 percent. The perseverance of this business plan is to converse this high profitable opportunity to my co-owner in the clothing shop and to the other investors of different organizations to encourage their interest in the venture.Alternatively, I'm also thinking of a loan finance made up of a $31,940 for about couples of years and a credit line of $48,620. In total, I will be in need of about $80,560 to fund the company or the first few months. The majority of the population of Ideal Cou nty is well educated, experienced, active, and pretty stable. The residences of the county also and wait out past periods of economic downturn. The dynamic economy, the lifestyle of Ideal County, and its exceptional environmental qualities attract people. Moreover, both public officials and business leaders are also aware of the need to keep our labor force well-armed with the marketable skills. From the Ideal County population, our potential targeted clients are the people who are professionals with annual earnings of about $50,000+, ages 20 to 30, whether single or married, without children, and college educated. Market Definition The projection of the world travel market is to grow about at greater than 4 percent average annually.I believe that this is somewhat faster than our general economic growth every year. I also planned to advertise my company outside of the United States. Hence, I selected such market like the European market, which is not the firmest growing market, and I believe this will be the most important destination, considering most the travelers will be international. I also think that among Europe, France, Italy, and Spain are the most popular destinations. Therefore, I decided to select tour operators with appropriate products in these areas as our initial partners.Business model The business model that will be used for this company is a distributor which is any business that purchases products directly from a manufacturer for resale either to retail outlets or directly to the buying public (Digging, 2012). For instance, a technology distributor would purchase computer parts from a technology manufacturer and then sell those parts wholesale to retail outlets for sale to the neural public (Digging, 2012). An auto dealership that deals in new cars would purchase vehicles directly from the manufacturer and sell them to the general public (Abram, 2003).According to the University of Southern California, Wall-Mart Department Stores qualifies a s a distributor because it purchases product directly from the manufacturer. Not all department stores have that kind of purchasing power (Digging, 2012). We will also be leasing a combined telephone/data-base system from the onset. This will beneficial by allowing up to ten sales staff to answer alls and have full on-screen data on clients and products. As service is one of our key components, it is essential that we have full access to all relevant data speedily and efficiently. However, there might be times that will not be possible to meet other locations, etc. Therefore, I should always be prefer for the worse and make sure that my staffs are well trained to provide the best customer service to my clients. Since, we are successfully operating the outdoor clothing shop; hence, we are using the adventure travel vacation sales ratio to study how many of them we are being able to sale on up to date. For the determinations of our sales projection, we believe hat that only about two i n five reviews will essentially effect in an adventure vacation being reserved. However, I believe this is a very conservative evaluation. I also undertake that there will be a firm accumulation of customers of the clothing shop who will approach us to learn more about the vacation packets and the destinations. Throughout the year we will also be able to bring in more clients by creating more promotional activities and of course our new clients of the clothing store. I am pretty hopeful that we will continue to strive with this trend to make Lucky Inc. To become well known.Based on the prediction, within next year we are projecting to sell about 600 adventure travel vacations for an estimated price of $3000. We also predicted that if we add insurance and other travel related service sales the gross profit will be nearly $ 2500,000 throughout the first year. Reference Abram, Rwanda, (2003). Our Education System Needs to Be Improved essays

Our Education System Needs to Be Improved essays Our Education System Needs To Be Improved Education plays an important role in our society, which is the key of success for our future. This is why everybody has the obligation to go to school. Therefore, education system shall be considerate seriously. In What Our Education System Needs is More Fs, Carl Singleton suggests that our education system need to be improved by failing students. He states that teachers have tendency to pass unfaithfully students for more than 20 years, which means that teachers pass students who dont deserve to pass. The reason is that teachers dont want to feel guilty by failing them, so they quite change their grading standard. Another reason to increase the number of grade F is to eliminate illiterate graduate students from high school. Therefore, students who deserve to go to college will be able to read and write well. He also mentioned that the grade F would pull the parents attention to their childrens education, and makes the school boards and principals aware of the degradation of the education system. Finally, Singleton proposes that all teachers should respect the standard grading line in order to keep the education system in a good shape. Singletons arguments imply that the education system is getting worse from days to days because there are more and more graduates with lower quality knowledge. He also conveys that teachers easily pass students because teachers want to have a lower rate of failed students in their class, and proving that their teaching methods are efficient. Without Fs nobody would knows that the systems is in troubles. Moreover, school board and principal would ignore the issue, which help to save money and avoid futures difficulties management such as overload classes with those who have to repeat the class. Singleton insights that school doesnt want to take their responsibilities to fail students because th...

Writing Your Thesis Proposal Like a Pro

Writing Your Thesis Proposal Like a Pro Satisfactorily completing a masters or PhD thesis- which includes background research, original research, and writing- indicates that you are qualified to join the community of scholars who advance our collective understanding of the world. Why write a thesis proposal? The purpose of writing a thesis proposal is to convince a faculty committee that you know enough to move forward with your Masters or PhD research. This transition from a masters or doctoral degree student to a masters or doctoral degree candidate amounts to a stamp of approval from the university, and comes with substantial benefits. You are authorized to conduct the proposed research, and can attach the universitys name to yourself and your research. Depending on the field and institution, this approval can come with direct financial support in the form of research or teaching fellowships.Approval of your thesis also comes with improved access to university resources, including faculty who can guide your research and c areer; research equipment and facilities; and specialized libraries, collections, and databases. A university affiliation also opens doors to many other resources. Do you need to interview survivors of childhood sexual abuse? Your recruitment flyers will get much better results if your name is followed with a university affiliation. Do you need tissue samples of rare brain tumors, or access to ancient Egyptian documents written on papyrus? That university affiliation will help. While a thesis proposal is specifically to fulfill academic requirements, youll likely use the same general strategy later in your career. You may write grant proposals to secure research funding from organizations like the National Endowment for the Humanities or the March of Dimes. You may write investment proposals to secure funding for the new drug your company is developing, or the new charter school you are planning with like-minded educators. In all these cases, you are describing a problem that needs t o be solved or a question that needs to be answered, and explaining why you and your idea deserve their support. What is in a thesis proposal?Different programs have different guidelines for a thesis proposal, but typical requirements are as follows:Title: A one-sentence summary of your thesis proposal.Project summary: A ~250 word summary of your thesis proposal. You should introduce your system and question, outline your research methods, and state your anticipated results and conclusions.Introduction: This section provides context for your research by providing background information on the questions being addressed and explaining how your work will fill a gap in our knowledge or change the way we think about something. You should also discuss why your study is of general interest. In the final introductory paragraph, clearly and concisely state your research question and hypothesis or hypotheses.Proposed study: Here you present, in as much detail as possible, the study you propose to conduct. Your study should be feasible with the time and resources that are available to you. It should also advance our collective understanding of the field, even if your hypothesis turns out to be wrong. Be sure to provide enough detail so that a reader with a basic understanding of your field can understand what you plan to do. Common techniques do not need to be explained, but be sure to describe the variations to the procedure that are specific to your experiment. Be sure to include appropriate controls, such as sham treatments for experimental manipulations. Consider your research methods carefully- do they really test your hypothesis or hypotheses?Anticipated Results: Consider the possible outcomes of your study, how you would interpret them, and how they would allow you to discriminate among your hypotheses. Will you be able to meet the goals you set out in your introduction? Be sure to consider how your anticipated findings would change the way we think about the topic and how they fit in the context of the field. This is also the place where you should consider potential shortcomings or limitations of your proposed study. You may also speculate on the generality of your findings and suggest follow-up questions that might stem from your work.References: Depending on your degree program and area of research, your reference list may include as few as 10 references (for a masters program involving a small research project) to well over 100 references (for a PhD program in an area of intensive study). The goal of earning a masters or PhD degree is to demonstrate competency as a scholar who can advance our collective understanding, so you must become familiar with the literature in your field of study. Plan on spending a lot of time assembling your reference list and working to understand the research described.Tables: If appropriate.Figures: If appropriate. How do I pick a topic?Whether youre working towards a masters degree or a PhD- or writing a the sis proposal as a classroom assignment- youll spend a lot of time working on your proposal. Be sure to start with a topic that is of genuine interest to you.In fields where research requires a lot of specialized equipment and resources- your possible thesis topics will be limited to what your thesis advisor and department are willing and able to support. In those fields (i.e., many of the biological sciences), you largely choose your thesis topic when you choose your department and your advisor. Choose carefully. Graduate students in these fields may spend less time choosing a thesis topic, but may spend more time on background reading in these areas of intensive study.Students in all fields will have some limitations. For sociology research, youll be limited by the populations you have access to. In the humanities, you may be limited by the availability of primary sources. If your research requires studying ancient calligraphy scrolls housed in a Taiwanese museum, you better be sur e you can get to Taiwan and gain access to those scrolls.Even with these limitations, the number of possible research topics can seem impossibly large. As you put together a list of possible topics, keep in mind that the goal of your graduate research is to contribute something new to our collective understanding. If you choose a research topic that has already been extensively studied- such as Shakespeares use of figurative language or unique characteristics of the bacterium E. coli- you will have lots of previous studies to wade through and few options for novel research.Photo by Matt Ragland on UnsplashOn the other hand, if you pick a topic for which there is almost no previous work- such as the romantic habits of homosexual Alaskan scuba divers- you will likely have trouble convincing your thesis committee that you can gather meaningful data in a reasonable amount of time. In general, you want to pick a topic that has been covered in existing research- or that is a straightforwa rd extension of existing research- but that still has many important, unanswered questions.Searching the literatureWhether you were assigned a research project based on what your advisor can support, or start with a list of interesting topics, your next step is to dig into the published literature.A good place to start is to read several recent research papers on your topic of interest; most papers suggest follow-up studies in the discussion section. Alternatively, a review paper often considers what research might be pursued next. Remember that this is a research proposal, not a literature review. For your selected topic, you need to develop a testable hypothesis- that you have the resources to test. This is where talking to your advisor, senior graduate students, and other people in your field is essential. They can offer insight on what is really feasible. As you read these primary research papers, notice that the format closely parallels the format of a thesis proposal. If the ti tle doesnt catch your eye, you are less motivated to read the project summary (or abstract). If the abstract doesnt sound interesting, you are less enthusiastic about reading the introduction. If the introduction doesnt clearly and convincingly describe why the research is needed, you are unlikely to care about the results. Aim to write a clear and convincing thesis proposal.Final commentsIt often helps to start with an outline. Be sure to include citations and a reference list in your outline and early drafts. It is imperative to correctly cite the previous work that has led to your thesis proposal, and many hours have been lost trying to track down lost citations.Be sure to follow your graduate programs guidelines for the thesis proposal. There are often specific requirements for the font, margins, word count, tables, figures, number of references, and how citations should be formatted.Be objective in your language: test hypotheses, do not try to prove them. Discuss your thesis pr oposal with your advisor, your classmates, and anyone who is willing to listen to you. Talking about your ideas often helps to clarify them, and others might catch errors that you may have overlooked. This is a major benefit of being part of a community of scholars.

Funds Management and Portfolio Selection Assignment

Funds Management and Portfolio Selection - Assignment Example FMG has regression level of 2.1, which implies that an increase in the market returns by one percent will result to an increase in its overall returns by 2.1%. A positive regression between market and assets, according correlation and data theory, results to assets’ returns moving away those of the market. Consequently, higher regression levels imply greater impacts from the market. The performance of FMG can be associated to its huge weight in all ordinary market, since it is a company associated with mining, processing, as well as transportation of iron ore within the region of Pilbara, Western Australia. Being an iron ore exporting company all over the world, an improvement in the global economy is likely to result increases in the level of consumption, which will affect positively on the prices of FMG and index (Brailsford, Heaney & Chris, 2011). In addition, this effect is also likely to affect AXA in a similar manner, since it is also one of the companies with notable regression. AXA is the top most wealth management company in Australia and New Zealand with capital management as its integral objective. Its steady improvement is the overall performance in the Australian stock market can be closely associated with the company’s strong capital position. Comparing to other industries, mining industry is the biggest market in Australian, and it takes a huge shape in stock market. This is a reason behind FMG’s higher regress than other companies. Next, these companies set up to ten difference portfolios and the beta decrease with the portfolio extending (Sutton, 2009). When extra stock is added in each portfolio, the level of Beta reduces from 0.5 to 0.1. As a general measure of stock’s systematic risk, Beta is defined as the quantity of systematic risk present in a certain asset respective of the risky asset. A beta level below 1.0 show a stock with lower amount of systematic risk compared to the market, the reverse is true. The results

Walmart - Assignment Example Retuned items and goods whose shelf life is about to elapse are sold at lowered prices in bulk as well. In turn, impulse buying by the customer is evident. The wastage of such goods is then relieved from the business. The location of these goods is the he cashier’s stand that the customer accesses every time. The location plays a vital role in effortless accessibility and capturing of the individuals attention. The allocation of coupons for items to the customers after every visit to the retailer promotes moneyless or little money in use when purchasing goods. Consumers collect as many coupons as possible overtime. The coupons purchase bulk items when presented to the cashier. There are instances where the buyer is relieved from using money at all where the coupons available satisfy the number of goods. The other outcome is paying extra for the goods where the items shopped exceed the value of the coupons. On both accounts, a negligible or low price on items purchased respecti vely is evident. The mentioned methods for lowering of prices are a future cost anticipated by the business on transactions based on established goals and forecast (Boyd, 23). Budgeted costs define the cost incurred for discounting and couponing to the business. It is safe to say the management should utilize the method on price lowering. The discounts allow for increased purchasing power on the consumers end. Goods bought are more in comparison to anticipated purchasing by the consumer at a given time. The mechanisms attract more consumers for this reason. The business creates a loyal large customer base. Overtime the business is able to foot the budgeted costs incurred. Increased demand of products is a merit on its own. Wal-Mart is reputable for quality goods. The methods for price reduction promote continuous flow of goods in the business. For this reason, expired or outdated goods evade the business. It is an advantage to the retailer because

Burnout on the workplace Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Burnout on the workplace - Term Paper Example It was just the result of my perceptions of the job I was doing. The very fundamental work-philosophy I learned was that a worker can work as long and hard as he wants if he is really able to enjoy the work. When I tried to with confidence and hope that I can meet what the company entrusted on me, I became physically and mentally strong and that in turn helped me overcome burnout. For my colleagues and team members, it was amazing how one who was burnout has almost turned to be one of the high-performing worker. When I successfully overcome the burnout, I could really help other six members in my team establish confidence and become strong both physically and mentally in performing their tasks as well. Stress is a mental and physical condition resulting from the perceived threat of danger. The factors leading to it may vary from organization to organization. As I observed, the main sources of the stress are:- Motivation itself is a tool to reduce employee burnout and stress. When an employee is found to have experienced burnout, the manager should, as first step, identify those jobs with the highest potential for burnout. For the manager to motivate his employees and help them find their jobs interesting, he may go for redesigning the jobs, clarifying their expectations, changing work schedules, ensuring better working condition etc. A normal reason for burnout is excessive demand of the organization, but this can be overcome by motivating employees to schedule their tasks, plan what things to be done first or which particular activity should be given priority etc. If the employee can meet the expectations, he becomes both physically and mentally stronger and then as a result becomes enthusiastic in the job he is doing. Becoming happier in the job is the right-path to free from

With the setting of the sun Essay -- English Literature

With the setting of the sun In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, there is a constant feeling of movement and the desire to get away. Nick, Gatsby, Wilson, Tom and Daisy all move, or have the intention of moving. Not only does this movement seem to foreshadow events in the book, but it also seems to lead to the conclusion that society as a whole in the 1920's was rather unstable and was undergoing constant change. Not all the characters move in the same way, and this shows how different their backgrounds and lifestyles are. The main movement seems to be from west to east. Throughout the decades man is said to be progressing through the steps of evolution and toward the setting sun, or east to west. The characters move in opposite direction from which the sun sets, which seems significant to the physical and psychological patterns of the characters. The two main characters that movement affects are Nick and Gatsby. The movement of Nick and Gatsby in this direction shows us how their personalities and feelings change as the sun goes down. There are also the various meanings that the sun has, that seems to map out, or affect their near future. The sun foreshadows Nick and Gatsby's actions and emotions, which in turn are affected by the many representations the sun has. Jay Gatsby is a character that the sun affects in such a way that it becomes a symbol of his ability to direct his will and, when put together with his dream, this gives him a sense of purpose. Jimmie Gatz was born in a town in Minnesota. After changing his name to Jay Gatsby, he moved to West Egg, Long Island in order to start a new life revolved around impressing Daisy. Here the sun represents a psychological belief that surp... ...nd that they, "had never, all along, intended doing anything at all. But it was done now. It was too late."(139) Just as the colors begin to bloom in the dazzling night sky they fade and disappear out of sight, just as Nick moves away. The rising sun has been used to describe progress and evolution, but as the sun travels backwards, it shows people for who they really are. The light is shone hard on the characters, so much so that they have nothing to hide behind. This minor action seems to set and change the entire novel at the same time. It also fits in perfectly with the flow or plot of the book. It shows how the characters are slowly opening up to their surroundings, and how much the sun, metaphorically, affects them. Throughout the novel, the sun has shone light on certain characters to show the power and hidden creativity of the unconscious mind.

Freedom Riders Essay -- essays research papers

The Freedom Riders were a group of college students and leaders of various racial equality organizations, both blacks and whites, which tested the law of integration for public transportation. The law was instated, but Alabama especially didn’t follow it. The Freedom Riders rode buses into the cities to see if the townspeople accepted or declined the new law. They in turn ended up beating, pummeling, and chasing the riders out of town with the white mobs. The Freedom Riders violently fought the segregation of blacks and whites for public transportation systems, and their victory led to the integration of many other places and the making of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Freedom Riders started their trip from Washington D.C. on May 4th, 1961 and were to end their trip in New Orleans, Louisiana (Cozzens 1). They started off with thirteen original riders, seven of them being Negroes (Winkler 1). One member named James Peck was a CORE member and there from the very beginning. He was there in 1947 participating in the Journey of Reconciliation also (Powledge 254). While the riders were in Anniston, Alabama on their way to Birmingham, a white mob, including members of the Ku Klux Klan, stopped the bus and wouldn’t let the riders off (Powledge 255). The mob slashed the tires, but the bus got away until about six miles down the road. The mob caught up to the bus and surrounded it until Ell Cowling, a police officer, pulled out his gun and badge and the Klansman backed away. Someone from the mob had thrown a flaming device into a bus window and the bus went up in flames (Garrow 2). Two highway patrolmen fired their guns to scare the crowd and mak e them leave so the passengers could safely get off the bus. Only twelve riders were taken... ...Civil Rights Act of 1964 was created. This act made racial discrimination in public places illegal, required employers to provide equal employment opportunities, and allowed projects involving federal funding to be cut of if there was evidence of discrimination. The Freedom Riders pulled through in the end after all the violence and injury that they were faced with. Their goal was to test the law of integration for public transportation systems and they succeeded. Many other good things came from their victory. Their will power and determination to follow through with the demonstration helped make the United States of America what it is today. Without the Freedom Rides, it may have been a lot longer before the government passed the law for integration. Also, the Deep South may have still been highly segregated today if it had not been for the rides in the 1960’s.

Characterization through Dialogue in Hemingway’s Works Essay

Alan Pryce-Jones (qtd. in Lamb 453) stated to describe the creative contribution of Ernest Hemingway in Literature that it is â€Å"his innovative dialogue might turn out to be his enduring memorial as a writer.† On the other hand, Elizabeth Bowen (qtd. in Lamb 454-455) said that dialogue in short stories or novels should copy as much as possible several â€Å"realistic qualities† of a conversation, namely: spontaneity, ambiguity, artlessness, allusiveness, irreverence, and erraticness. She further adds that the use of dialogue for the cause of exposition is rarely used for this purpose considering that elaboration can be done right at the start of the story. The use of dialogue to expose components of the story, particularly characterization, plus the drama inherent in it, is very difficulty to do. To start, the elementary literary definition of characterization of a story can be pursued by direct means. This is where the author narrates things concerning the character. A way to do this is bay giving description of the clothes the character wears, the manner by which he gesticulate,   or the way he stride on the street. The second means is through indirect method. This technique is shown on how he speaks, reacts and acts. The most usual way a writer address this component of characterization is done using the latter technique. And this is applied usually through dialogue or through the conversation between two characters. Ernest Hemingway wrote the Hills Like White Elephants in 1927. This story is included in the short story anthology Men Without Women. The story runs about a woman and a man. Both are sitting at a bar in a station waiting for a train going to Madrid. And they talk. By the way they converse, it is obvious that have spent sometime with each other. If the reader would casually read how the conversation happening between the two go, he will from the start of the story until it is finished end up clueless as to what is going on with the characters in the story. In a sense, Hills Like White Elephants display the iceberg theory of Hemingway and his deftness in handling dialogue in a story. If Hemingway was widely seen as a writer who wrote primarily for the dominating male, in Hills Like White Elephants, he is able to dissect the workings of a relationship where females most of the time are subjected to an unbalance relationship and furthermore dominated by the males (Raeburn 208). The means by which Hemingway is able to exploit this is through his creative creation of dialogue that discloses the characteristics of the couple: their speech, action and reaction. Through the use of dialogue, Hemingway is able rise to the dexterous ability to give character to his protagonist and antagonist. For a reader to totally appreciate and efficiently understand the characterization that Ernest Hemingway applied in Hills Like White Elephants and also to most of his stories, the reader first ought and must understand the tool and method by which the writer employ to express implicitly and indirectly the drama that is happening between the characters. This tool which ingeniously utilized by Hemingway is technique in his stories is called dialogue. Hemingway’s stories, as exemplified by Hills Like White Elephants, mainly runs marvelously through the innovation and utilization of the form of dialogue. This single-handedly tackled major aspects of characterization like speech, action of the characters and reaction of the characters. To quote again Alan Pryce-Jones (qtd. in Lamb 453), the creative contribution of Ernest Hemingway in Literature is â€Å"his innovative dialogue might turn out to be his enduring memorial as a writer.† Works Cited Lamb, Robert P. â€Å"Hemingway and the Creation of Twentieth-Century Dialogue.† Twentieth Century Literature 42 (1996): 453-580 Raeburn, John. â€Å"Skirting the Hemingway Legend.† American Literary History 1(1989):206-218

Theres and There are

Theres and There are Theres and There are Theres and There are By Maeve Maddox An odd-looking contraction Ive noticed recently is therere for there are. Haiti Airport Baggage Handlers, Therere Just Too Many! Therere too many kids Therere Just A Few Days Left If Therere Seasons(song title) Contractions are supposed to be easy to say. For example, theyre for they are is easy to utter, but adding another re to there to create therere produces a word difficult to pronounce. I wonder if this nearly unpronounceable contraction may have something to do with the proliferation of theres to begin sentences in defiance of the rules of agreement between subject and verb: Theres ten members on the council. Perhaps the speaker knows better, but is in contraction mode and at the last minute decides that ungrammatical theres is a better choice than unpronounceable therere. Besides being difficult to pronounce, therere looks peculiar. In writing intended to be read by others, its probably best to avoid such ungainly contractions as therere and wherere. Art as Survival in the Holocaust essays

Art as Survival in the Holocaust essays Creation in a world of destruction: Art as survival in the Holocaust The Holocaust in art and the art of the Holocaust are two distinctly different forms of art. The former refers to any art depicting or alluding to the Holocaust. It includes works created both during and after the war, by victims as well as people not directly threatened by the event. Whereas the art of the Holocaust is limited to works created by the victims from 1939 to 1945. What is most important about the art of the Holocaust is its means of reflecting its time both in its subject matter and in what it reveals about the artists themselves and the condition in which they worked. These people who struggled through the most deplorable conditions risked their lives to produce art. Art became their reason to live, and they used their talents to survive. Expressionism was the prevailing artistic force in Germany and Eastern Europe in years preceding Hitlers rise to power. It was a movement born a round the turn of the century, in artistic and social ferment, a rebellion against the formalism and sterility of academic art, which promoted the ideas of the bourgeoisie and the German empire. The Expressionist artist was driven by inner necessity to express his longings and anxieties. As a result the many artists of the Holocaust inherited the traditions of Expressionism and social criticism. When the Nazis came into power they were quick to condemn modern art, which, to them included abstract and Expressionist styles. Such works, along with those produced by Jews and those depicted inferior racial types, were considered evil and degenerate. Three months after Hitler came into power, they were banned from museums and art schools, while Jewish and undesirable political artists were forced to cease working, by 1937, 16,000 works of degene rate art had been confiscated. The Nazis considered art as a tool to use as a service...
